Human Trafficking Around the Globe

This page explains how children are marginalized and abandoned around the world because of Human Trafficking and forced sex labor. I read a book by the name of Sold by Patricia McCormick. It will help any beginning reader about Human trafficking understand the horrors of being SOLD.

The novel Sold is a story about a young girl sold into prostitution. Lakshmi is a thirteen-year-old girl who lives with her family in a small hut in the Middle East. Her family is desperately poor, but her life is full of simple pleasures like raising her pet goat and doing her schoolwork by lamplight. But when the harsh Himalayan monsoons wash away all that remains of the family's crops, Lakshmi's stepfather says she must leave home and take a job to support her family.

He introduces her to a glamorous stranger who tells her she will find her a job as a maid working for a wealthy family in the city. Glad to be able to help, Lakshmi undertakes the long journey to India and arrives at "Happiness House" full of hope. But she soon learns the unthinkable truth: she has been sold into prostitution. She refuses to be with men; therefore she is beaten and starved until she gives in. She explains how the men come and crush her bones with their weight. The split her open and she is torn and bleeding where the men have been.
An old woman named Mumtaz rules the brothel with cruelty. She tells Lakshmi that she is trapped there until she can pay off her family's debt. Mumtaz tells her that she must pay off her families’ debt, then she will be able to leave. She soon discovers that paying off her family’s debt is impossible and she is trapped in this horrible world that she must get out of.

She makes friendships that allow her to survive the horrible new world that she is living in. A day comes where she must make a decision-should she risk her life for a chance to go back home? This powerful novel renders a world that is as unimaginable as it is real and a girl who not only survives but triumphs.
